Asia again mixed, Europe slightly higher
A/O 05:10 PST, Dow futures screens are pointing upward by 38 points.
Japan's Nikkei average rose 0.4 percent to an eight-week closing high on Monday, boosted by gains in high-tech exporters such as Advantest Corp after rises in U.S. rivals late last week, with additional help coming from a weaker yen. Banks such as Mizuho Financial slid, giving up some of the hefty gains they made last week, as worries that they are likely to issue new stocks to enhance capital linger, driving the broader Topix index slightly lower.
The number of institutional investors and overseas players in the market was falling and retail investors chased consumer-linked. "The market is up, reflecting gains in exporters on a weaker yen, but overall trade remains slow as foreign investors, who are the main players in the market, are inactive due to the Christmas holiday,"
Hong Kong shares fell for a fifth straight session to a 2-½ month low on Monday, with banks and property counters leading the slide on concerns about further measures to restrain property speculation, while China stocks rose as property rebounded. Hong Kong shares extended losses in the afternoon, falling as much as 1.15percent to a session low of 20,932.77 before the benchmark Hang Seng ended down 1.08 percent or 227.78 points at 20,948.10, its lowest close since Oct 6. Brokers said the recent weakness of the Hong Kong dollar had triggered concern about liquidity outflows and investors had started to look at fundamentals as liquidity dried up.
The China Enterprises Index of Mainland Chinese stocks closed down 1.07 percent at 12,203.17. Banks remained weak on worries they might need to make provisions against their Dubai exposure as debt-ridden conglomerate Dubai World was expected on Monday to ask key creditors for more time to pay off its loans while leaving unsettled the prospects of being paid back in full.
