Alcoa earnings help lift world stocks
Overnite trade looking better tonight than others of late as Alcoa's post-closing report showed a loss substantially lower than expected. This gives rise to hope on the earnings front when the season really gets rolling week after next. Expect a higher US opening as a result albeit with (slightly assuaged) concerns over today's 30-year Govvy bond auction resulting from a decent bid in Wednesday's 10-year event.

LONDON (Reuters) – Forecast-beating results from U.S. bellwether Alcoa (AA.N) helped lift European stocks and draw global equities out of the red on Thursday, while currency markets reversed some of their recent cautious patterns.
The U.S. aluminum giant kicked off the latest U.S. earnings season on Wednesday by reporting a third consecutive quarterly loss, but it beat estimates by a large margin due to cost cuts.
Equity markets have been hit over recent weeks as second thoughts about the chances of a quick global economic recovery have risen.
The corporate earnings reporting season is likely to dominate bourses as it gets under way properly next week for what it says about how companies are weathering the global recession.
