Asian Shares Up In Quiet Mkt
UPDATE2!! CIT relief rally spreads as previous concerns over retailers losing credit lines thus spidering another round of contagion assuaged... DOW screen trade indicating roughly a 50-point higher open a/o about 05:30 CDT (see below graphic snapshot of 6 sample markets (minus Tokyo on Holiday).
UPDATE!! News CIT rescued by bondholders lifts spirits to bring both KOSPI and HANG SENG gains of roughly 2% while other Asian markets (ex-Nikkei) gain about half that. US screen trade strengthens accordingly albeit substantially more "muted" as US traders await bailout specifics (Devil in details, you know)..
Mid-morning Asian trade higher on light volume as Tokyo remains closed for "Marine Day" holiday - traders appear tentative ahead of this weeks' flood of earnings reports as outlined in the blog entry two positions below this one... Overnite US screen trade lower but so slightly as to obviate guessing the open especially with over 11 hours to go..
Asian Shares Up In Quiet Mkt; Kospi Leads On Earnings Hopes
By Rosalind Mathieson Jul 19, 2009, 8:54 p.m. EST
SINGAPORE (MarketWatch) -- Asian share markets were gaining Monday as commodity stocks lifted in Sydney on higher metals prices, but with overall trade quiet as Japanese markets were shut for a public holiday.
Australia's S&P/ASX 200 was up 0.7% with South Korea's Kospi Composite rising 1.6% and New Zealand's NZX-50 0.3% higher. U.S. stock futures were mildly lower in screen trade, after Wall Street nudged higher on Friday.
"Being a Monday morning, I wouldn't expect too much activity. Once again the news flow is pretty dull," said Grant Williamson, an adviser at Hamilton Hindin Greene.
