Earnings Season: Game-Changer—for Good or Bad
Reality is that the true earnings season still won't begin for a couple of weeks...
Everybody's saying it's upon us because the historical start of reportings season has always begun with Alcoa which reports Wednesday an expected 34cent/sh loss vs. 66cents positive in year ago quarter. Alcoa's numbers are reflective of both raw materials (read "commodities") and energy costs. Anybody know how many kilowatt hours of energy required to smelt a tonne of Aluminum Ore?
Me either - rhetorical question but it's a LOT.
This is reflective of an email report sent to research subscribers on Thursday wherein I pointed out the year-over-year comparisons shouldn't be expected to get better until next quarter and even then only because 3Q 2008 was bad rather than because 3Q 2009 will improve much.
Still, the earnings slate remains sparse both this week and next..

Second-quarter earnings could go a long way toward showing whether the much-ballyhooed "green shoots" are real or merely illusions masking deeper economic problems.
