Tokyo late morning jump drags overnite SP screens along.
Positive morning action in Hong Kong wasn't reflected until just before lunch in Tokyo when the Nikkei shot up dragging overnite US S&P futures screens along for the ride. While I was on the plane flying down to Nassau Town (Antigua actually) previous jubilant earnings reports reflecting bottom line improvements resulting from particularly effective cost controls apparently seemed to fade as traders and investors alike realized only so much benefit can be derived by cutbacks which then leaves naught to add to the top line because nobody's left with a paycheck to afford new purchases.... Apple helped of course, but even Jobs' jockeys can't change the calculus alone.
My limited and ancient (stone tablets and abacus') education leads me to recall the word "conundrum"..
HONG KONG, July 23 (Reuters) - Hong Kong shares extended gains to jump 2.6 percent to a 10-month high on Thursday as investors scooped up banks and property stocks after a two-day lull in the market.
By 0405 GMT the benchmark Hang Seng Index .HSI was up 488.65 points at 19,734.92, slightly off a 10-month high of 19,744.23
TOKYO (Reuters) - Japan's Nikkei stock average jumped more than 1 percent on Thursday as exporters such as Sony Corp climbed in the wake of a weaker yen, with strong buying of futures also pushing the cash market higher.
Kyocera Corp and other high-tech exporters advanced, riding a wave of confidence about U.S. consumer spending after bellwethers such as Apple Inc posted solid quarterly earnings.
