Asia retreats from 10-month peak -
UPDATE!! A/O 07:15 CDT, markets turning slightly upward on late-session news out of Hong Kong the territory's GDP grew by 3.3% in latest reporting quarter vs. a 4.3% drop last quarter. While one quarter does not a recovery make, reporters are saying the HK recession is well-and-truly over much as they reported yesterday for both Germany and France. Perhaps they'll be proven right - certainly hope so and I imagine my lingering curmudgeonly concern over America's excess vacant housing inventories might not apply to Hong Kong.
Asia in broad retreat for various reasons - Nikkei pares initial gains back on disappointing eco-data from here and in sympathy with Chinese (Shanghai & Hong Kong) concerns over Chi-Com tightening as well as a flood of shelf IPOs hitting the market after a year of capital lockup (not to be confused with Hedge Fund lockups which are another matter)... In a word "OVERSUPPLY" - companies trying to cash out quickly to raise capital before the door closes them off - as in the R/E & mortgage markets when early credible evidence of higher rates tends to initiate a flood of new sales along with re-fis.. In this case, the rush might be proving a self-fulfilling prophecy or at least something close to it...
US screen trade essentially flat - with a recognizable (albeit only slightly negative so far) bias. The below snapshot reflects sit-rep a/o shortly past midnite CDT.
The next blog (last one posted prior to this) reflects analyses, history and expectations relative to tomorrow's pre-opening industrial production/capacity utililization report.
TOKYO, Aug 14 (Reuters) - Japan's Nikkei average pared gains to drop back from a 10-month high on Friday as falls in Chinese stock markets led nervous investors to lock in profits before the weekend even as evidence of an improving global economy grew.
Germany and France ended their recessions in April-June, earlier than many policymakers and economists had expected, though U.S. data on retail sales and jobs disappointed. [ID:nLD375194] [nLD498855] But concerns over an increased supply of shares amid new listings and rights issues sent Shanghai shares .SSEC down 2.4 percent, with the Hang Seng Index .HSI reversing course by mid-morning to track them downwards
(Updates to midday)
HONG KONG/SHANGHAI, Aug 14 (Reuters) - China stocks slid 2.4 percent on Friday, knocking Hong Kong shares off their firm start, as worries about new supplies of shares joined a list of concerns that left this year's rally looking overdone.
Financial shares dragged the index lower amid market talk that one major Chinese brokerage would soon list its shares in Shanghai and another was about to get approval for an IPO, while a major bank announced an expected rights issue.
The Shanghai Composite Index .SSEC was headed for a 6 percent drop for the week, its worst in more than five months.
"The index has entered a correction phase and investors are maintaining a wait-and-see stance as worries linger over policy and the economic recovery, which is not on solid ground," said Zhang Xiang, Chief strategist at Guodu Securities.
