Asian market holidays leave little traction...
UPDATE2!! A/O 07:00 CDT pre-opening announcement of M&A activity (Dell/Perot Systems $3.9 byn deal) has lifted the mood and cut earlier screen trade deficit by almost half. Now reading an approximate 40-point lower Dow opening...
UPDATE!! Euro share trade weakens with most markets off between 75 and 125 BP against largely closed Asian activity. US screen trade following suit showing roughly 60-point lower Dow opening a/o 05:27 CDT...
With Tokyo markets closed until Wednesday nite (our time) it's gonna be hard to draw any conclusions or even report directionality from the East until full participation reappears. We also are given to understand Chinese markets are set for a one-week holiday beginning Oct 1 (no doubt to celibrate your humble editor's birthday - HA!). Meanwhile, Hang Seng holds steady on Monday while overnite US screen trade is pointing to a slightly (single digits points-wise) lower open a/o 02:00 CDT....
The U.S. dollar bounced back against the euro and the yen in Asia Monday, in a technical correction after sustained losses in recent days, but should remain in tight ranges ahead of key events later this week.
With many large Asian markets closed for holidays, including Japan, Singapore and India, the dollar was well-supported in low-volume trade, as foreign exchange players await a statement from the U.S. Federal Reserve due Wednesday..
Hong Kong shares held steady on Monday after setting new highs for the year last week, while Shanghai stocks slipped 1.47 percent on concerns over heavy share supply following new IPO approvals. Ten companies approved to list on Shenzhen's second board said they would begin investor roadshows and take subscriptions on Friday. "Hong Kong actually did quite well; you can see it did not really follow the mainland market's lead. That's because hot money continues to support trading, so we're still positive in terms of liquidity," said Steve Cheng, associate director at Shenyin Wanguo Securities in Hong Kong. General sentiment had cooled but analysts said the mainland government would not allow it to deteriorate further ahead of China's long national day celebrations from Oct 1 until the following week.
"The mainland government wouldn't want to spoil the fun ahead of National Day," Cheng said. "After the national holiday, we might see a correction, depending on the changes that we see in mainland monetary policy. But I think the PBoC (central bank) is likely to maintain a loose monetary policy."
