Nikkei loses more than 2 pct as yen gains; JAL up
Overnite overseas trade substantially weaker in Asia on stronger Yen vs weaker Greenback, while a touch of life twitched in Shanghai. Early Euro-trade displaying a broad near 1% selloff across the board. US screen trade pointing towards a 60+point lower Dow opening at the moment.... That said, many Chicago traders were saying last week wasn't really the first trading week of selloff-prone September because of the way Labor Day fell vs. so many schools starting 1st semester earlier this year. I didn't subscribe to this but then again, I was thwarted (happily so actually) in my concerns over September syndrome. Thus, this really isn't a stubborn attempt at sticking to my guns - simply a cautionary note that perhaps they might've been right. Viewed against the backdrop of Asian weakness early this morning, it seems encumbent upon me to point out this admittedly non-scientific, anecdotal tidbit.
Japan's Nikkei stock average fell 2.3 percent on Monday, with Toyota Motor Corp and other exporters battered as the dollar hit a 7-month low against the yen. But Japan Airlines climbed nearly 8 percent following news that the struggling airline was in talks on investment by American Airlines and Delta Airlines. The benchmark Nikkei .N225 shed 242.27 points to 10,202.06 after earlier falling as much as 2.6 percent to 10,170.74. The broader Topix lost 1.7 percent to 934.05.
Hong Kong shares fell on Monday tracking a softer tone in overseas markets, but further downside is seen limited with firmer mainland stock markets and hopes for recovery in the world's third-largest economy giving support.
