Weekly Market Preview:
Sun Sep 06
While recovery hopes remain on the rise, Wall Street faces its historical worst month of the year, coming exactly one year from last September's major meltdown. The market has already risen 50 percent from last March's lows but evidence continues to persist that both traders and investors are turning cautious.
Wall Street's mettle will be tested as traders return from summer. Markets ended the first week of the month with the worst weekly performance since early July, though the bulk of losses were recouped Friday as investors deemed the monthly employment report to be less dire than expected. September has historically been one of the nastiest months of the year with last year pounding home the historical reminder in spades. Increased volume this week has investors keen to see what direction the market will take after Labor Day. U.S. markets will be closed on Monday but recently seen stronger downside volume is not an encouraging sign as it may signal investors are becoming more determinedly bearish.
"What you'd like to see is some evidence that players came back from the weekend and that they're starting to move assets to this market," said Jim Paulsen, chief investment officer at Wells Capital Management in Minneapolis. "This whole advance has largely been that people quit selling."
A lighter week of economic data with reports on weekly jobless claims and preliminary September consumer sentiment on tap as well as U.S. international trade balance and the Fed Beige Book recounting anecdotal evidence on economic conditions.
