Asia Gains on Short-Covering, anticipation.
UPDATE!! a/o 04:00 CDT, Euro shares continue to show strength lifting pre-opening US screens to an approximate 80-point Dow gain.. Let us hope the trend continues both for short-term market's sake but in 3Q earnings reporting season as well.
After yesterday's close, Alcoa posted a surprise profit through cost cutting and higher aluminum prices after three consecutive quarterly losses, sending its stock 6 percent higher. Alcoa, which has curtailed metal production by more than 20 percent and cut its workforce by about 30 percent since the downturn began, said there are signs that key markets are stabilizing and it expects global consumption to rise by 11 percent in the second half of this year. But the CEO said metal prices and demand had not yet improved enough to restart idled smelter production facilities.
U.S. screen trade showing a gain of +80 Dow points a/o about 02:00 CDT.
Japan's Nikkei average rose 0.5 percent on Thursday as exporters such as Tokyo Electron gained on short-covering, while Nikon Corp jumped after a brokerage upgrade. Shipping firms extended gains after the Baltic Exchange's main sea freight index rose to a seven-week high on Wednesday with expectations of fresh Chinese demand driving momentum. After moving in and out of negative territory, the benchmark Nikkei225 ended the morning up 49.81 points at 9,849.41. It advanced 1.1 percent the previous day. The broader Topix gained 0.5 percent to 889.80.
Hong Kong stocks rose for a fourth day on Thursday as investors chased local developers including Sino Land as property prices are expected to rise, while market newcomers did well on their debuts. Aluminum Corporation of China gained 2.97 percent, lifted by an unexpected third-quarter profit from U.S. aluminum producer Alcoa . The benchmark Hang Seng Index rose 0.39 percent, or 81.95 points, to 21,323.54 at the midday break. Turnover was down from Wednesday. "The market has been very bullish in the last few sessions. There is some follow-through buying, as people are expecting China will do well when it re-opens on the 9th. Another major factor is that the U.S. dollar is extremely weak. That forced people to buy risky assets like stocks and gold." IPOs debuting today were priced a lot lower than their targets however. Interest for IPOS isn't coming back, but the near-panic about oversupply seems to be over.
European shares moved higher in early trade on Thursday, with banks and commodity stocks the biggest gainers as investors awaited rate decisions by the Bank of England and European Central Bank. The pan-European FTSEurofirst 300 index of top shares was up 1.2 percent at 1,001.05 points. "Alcoa had better than anticipated results, which is good. It is now all about anticipating quarter-three earnings. There is a general sense that ... earnings are going to be more positive than expectations," said Bernard McAlinden, market strategist at NCB Stockbrokers.
