JAL concerns flatten Asian trade
UPDATE!! A/O 03:15 CDT US screen trade higher by Dow 20 points.
Euro shares trade higher early Friday, banks and energies gainers on renewed growth optimism after strong results from IBM/Google. Investors also await BofA and GE reports. FTSEurofirst index up 0.6 percent at 1,023.18 points. GE figures are seen better, but in the banking sector there is a disconnect between investment & retail banking sides… as the investment banking has shown very good numbers but nobody really believes the retail banking ops are following suit in this jobless recovery. FTSE100 index was up 0.6 percent, Germany's DAX was 0.5 percent higher with France's CAC40 higher by 0.3% at last check (about 03:00 CDT).
Japan's Nikkei225 flat on Friday, with banks falling on policy uncertainty and JAL tumbling on worries about its future. Retailers and drugs lent support. Cash-strapped JAL tumbled 10 percent for a second day in a row, with concerns about the size and content of a rescue package also contributing to pressure on banking shares. Sources say JAL has asked creditors for 600 billion yen in financial restructuring aid, including debt forgiveness and debt-for-equity swaps. There's increasing concern about the future of the company and whether it's heading for a GM-style bankruptcy.
Hong Kong stocks are set to open 0.63 percent firmer after hitting 14-month closing highs twice in a row, with profit-taking expected to weigh on the key index later in the session, and oil issues supported by rising crude prices. Benchmark Hang Seng Index was indicated to open up 138.98 points at 2,138.06, after settling at a 14-month closing high on Thursday. The China Enterprises Index of mainland Chinese stocks set to rise 0.84 percent to 12,967.52.
A/O 12:20 CDT, screen trade plus Dow 10.
