N225 close delayed - China's NASDAQ clone doubles in Debut
UPDATE!! A/O 06:30 CDT, Dow screen trade weaker by roughly 30 points.
With Thursday's surprise GDP strength now behind us, focus will almost undoubtedly shift to worries over stimulus withdrawal, which I hereby officially dub: "Stim-Angst".
A/O 02:30 CDT, Dow screen trade off by mid-single-digits.
Japan's Topix index closed up 1.4 percent on Friday, but the benchmark Nikkei stock average .N225 close was still delayed over 30 minutes past the normal time. An official at the Tokyo stock exchange said it appeared the close of one share had been delayed, but did not elaborate. Jiji news agency said the exchange was investigating the reason for the delay.
Both Hong Kong & Shanghai rebounded on Friday, as solid earnings from top Chinese lenders pushed up bank stocks, while China's remark about sticking to its loose monetary policy lifted overall sentiment. China's long-awaited Nasdaq-style second board also debuted with a speculative surge that more than doubled the price of all 28 stocks. Central bank governor said on Friday that China would stick to an appropriately loose monetary policy, reaffirming Beijing's commitment to easier rates as speculation mounts about an eventual policy shift.
European shares essentially unchanged midmorning Friday after sharp gains in the previous session on data showing the U.S. had emerged from recession, with firmer banks offsetting weaker energies. FTSEurofirst virtually flat at 997.37 points, having risen 1.8 percent yesterday.
Both BNP Paribas and Credit Suisse upgraded Lloyds to "neutral" from "underperform", while Bank of Ireland and Allied Irish rose 10.9 and 7.7 percent respectively after the Irish parliament completed another stage of talks to approve its "bad bank" plan (NAMA), soothing jitters that the process faces further delays.
It will be more difficult for markets to rally now," said Bernard McAlinden, investment strategist at NCB Stockbrokers. "You're not going to get the same positive surprises in economic news. The U.S. GDP was good news on the day, but the markets will remain worried about (monetary) stimulus withdrawal moving forward."
