Nikkei ekes +0.2 percent in see-saw action..
UPDATE!! As time marches on, Euro trade picks up significantly as can be seen in the addendum entry below the Asian coverage and in the graphic snapshot taken just before 05:00 CDT. US pre-opening screen trade currently reading +70 Dow points.
While Monday's US market action smacked of continued strength and cash allocations just waiting for signs of hope to enter the ring, Asian markets (though still significantly thin due to Mainland China's continuing holiday) seem stressed over a veritable flood of new IPO share supply thruout the region as corporate finance types rush to market rather than take a chance the "window of opportunity" might slide shut again. You will never hear THIS analyst say the Asians aren't particularly apt at business despite the poor choices made by the financial zaibatsu after the Tokyo real-estate bubble burst going on (what? 20?) years ago now (something we seem to be emulating thru public bailouts rather than just sliding under the rug like the Japanese did). Should anyone care to take a peek at our intermmediate term future, suggest you look at Japan for about a decade and a half after the Thai Baht implosion (but that's just the craw sticking in my throat lo these many months past).
Overnite US screen trade too close to call other than a teeny positive bias a/o 03:00 CDT.
Japan's Nikkei average inched up 0.2 percent in see-saw trade on Tuesday as bank shares climbed after Goldman Sachs upgraded the U.S. banking sector. The benchmark Nikkei 225 rose 17.31 points to 9,691.80. At one stage, it fell as far as 9,628.67, its lowest since July 22. The broader Topix added 0.5 percent. Mazda shot up 7.6 percent after it said it would raise up to $1.1 billion in a share sale to invest in hybrid and other technologies in what analysts said was a long-overdue bid to close the gap with rivals. It also cut its loss forecast for the year to March in half.
Hong Kong stocks rose 0.68 percent on Tuesday, tracking gains on Wall Street, while Chinese gold miners rallied after gold prices inched up. But cement maker China Resources Cement fell on its market debut, opening down 4 percent, reflecting souring sentiment towards oversupply of IPOs. People lack interest in recent IPOs after Metallurgical Corp. of China fell below its offering price, said one researcher. "There are more IPOs coming in the fourth quarter, but we have heard that companies are postponing their listings or cutting their IPO prices. There is a lot of negative news around."
European shares rose 0.7 percent early on Tuesday, adding to gains the previous session after data showed the U.S. services sector expanded for the first time since 2008, reigniting recovery hopes. FTSEurofirst 300 was up at 977.23, after closing 0.8 percent higher the previous session. The index had started the fourth quarter on shaky ground after as a series of soft data shook confidence after it posted its best quarterly performance in nearly 10 years in the three months to the end of September. One analyst was quoted thus: "U.S. equities gained about half a percent more after Europe closed (on Monday) ... and shares came off so much on Thursday and Friday that investors are turning an eye to bargain hunting.”
