Weekly Market & Eco-Data Preview
Weak reports from bellwethers crashed enthusiasm Friday but still, investors await one of the busiest weeks of 3Q earnings season hoping results will not only top (low) estimates, but show improving sales while also providing glimmers of continuing upbeat outlooks. IMHO, there's a lot of "IFS" in that scenario but naysayers (including yours truly) have consistently been proven wrong in 2Q and 3Q 2009. With 61 S&P 500 reporters now behind us, 79% have beat street, 11% matched, and 10% failed on the expectations game. 3Q S&P 500 earnings are expected to be down 22.6% YoY, a slight improvement from expectations of a 24.6% last week, thanks to upbeat results from JPM, Citi and GS. But after a good start, the market took a hit Friday after results from BofA, IBM and GE disappointed.
Next week, another 75 S&P 500 companies are due to report, including 11 Dow components.
