Le Punch-Bowl departee'....
Hopefully without sounding too “I told you so”(-ish), Mainland China’s two recent moves to signal tightening have now come home to roost in the minds of the Internationally (or Global Macro-ly) naive.
Shares in Hong Kong and China tumbled to near one-month closing lows on Wednesday, led by mainland banks on news China's banking authorities have told some major banks to curb lending, clouding their outlooks. Worries that China may be moving towards slower growth weighed on global markets on Wednesday after news that China's central bank has ordered at least two lenders to increase their reserves.
Overnite on the evening of Jan 20-21 (Thurs AM Shanghai time), China announced a wave of economic data after the midday close that included its fourth quarter gross domestic product, which rose 10.7 percent on a year earlier compared to a Reuters forecast of a 10.9 percent rise, as well as consumer price data and industrial production.
Tonight, some are espousing the opinion today’s US market moves were overdone. Let us hope so. Personally, given the level of psychological and literal dependence on Chinoise locomotion to save us from ourselves, I think not.
