G20-wrapup coverage...
By Ronald D. Orol, MarketWatch
TORONTO (MarketWatch) -- Top leaders of Group of 20 major economies reached an agreement on common goals for deficit and debt reduction Sunday, but with governments permitted to use their own methods to reach those goals, according to a summit statement.
"Sound fiscal finances are essential to sustain recovery, provide flexibility to respond to new shocks, ensure the capacity to meet the challenges of aging populations, and avoid leaving future generations with a legacy of deficits and debt," the G-20 communiqué said. "Those countries with serious fiscal challenges need to accelerate the pace of consolidation."
The goals are based on a proposal put forward by Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper for advanced economies of the G-20 member countries that would have them cut their deficits in half by 2013. The agreement also calls for countries to "stabilize or reduce" their ratio of government debt to gross domestic product by putting them on a downward path by 2016.
But after some G-20 countries, including the U.S., Japan and India, raised objections, the deficit and debt reduction goals were described more as expectations rather than deadlines.
