Betting on a corn bubble
Commentary: Poultry producers clipped, but don’t rule out upsets
SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch) — Corn, the elemental building block of the American food chain, is trading at a two-year high. That’s great news for corn farmers, but it’s prompting plenty of hand-wringing by those whose livelihoods depend on feed prices.
December corn futures recently topped $5 a bushel on the Chicago Board of Trade, a remarkable 40% jump in just more than a month.
The U.S. Agriculture Department, citing a disappointing crop in the Midwest, last week trimmed its estimated 2010-11 crop yield by about 1.5%. Analysts warn that further cuts are likely. But with only about 20% of the crop actually harvested, it’s still early in the season and conditions can change.
