Asian Shares Mostly Fall; Kospi Up On Samsung
UPDATE !! A/O 03:20 AM CDT, Euro shares down an average of 1.6% across the board while overnite US futures screens continue to weaken - DOW now projecting an 80-point lower open.
A/O 23:30 CDT Sunday, US screen futures trade pointing to a 50 point weaker DOW opening as traders and investors struggle with earnings angst (see below graphic snapshot taken at 11:30PM Chi-Time)....
My best guess? Gonna be a tough quarter on virtually ALL fronts as demand for govvy debt financing collides head on with economic needs for cheap money.
Aside from Alcoa reporting an expected loss Wednesday vs about thrice the EPS level in year-ago quarter (positive numbers back then), earnings season doesn't really kick off until the week after the week after next. Warnings however, will probably proliferate.
On other hand, getting back to colliding demands for public v. private sector cash, I'm old enough to recall both wage & price controls inder Nixon which leads me to both take heart that Govvy management techniques have yet to run out (though FED quivver is essentially empty) - which runs headlong into my Libertarian leanings shouting in my mind's ear - DRACONIAN ALERT - watch out!! Such is life in times like these.
And though I wasn't there, over the weekend I took the time to do some newspaper archival research, which served to verify the shrill accusatory remarks directed at Obama are almost a mirror-image of those thrown at FDR during his first term.
Unfortunately, it took WWII to really bury the depression.
though published previously this weekend, the coming week's pertinent ecodata/earnings schedules/expectations are online at:

Asian Shares Mostly Fall; Kospi Up On Samsung
by Rosalind Mathieson
SINGAPORE (MarketWatch) -- Asian shares were mostly lower Monday in quiet trade after a U.S. holiday Friday, with some caution creeping in as the U.S. corporate earnings season drew closer. Oil, commodity and shipping stocks were leading decliners though Samsung Electronics supported in Seoul after some reassuring comments on its second quarter performance.
Japan's Nikkei 225 was down 1.6% with Australia's S&P/ASX 200 off 1.5% and New Zealand's NZX-50 down 0.6%, with Hong Kong's Hang Seng Index down 1.3% and Taiwan's main index 0.5% lower. South Korea's Kospi Composite was up 0.2% but off its initial highs.
"Sentiment isn't great at the moment. The market may have run a bit hard in the second quarter. This is just a retracement and not unexpected," said Macquarie Private Wealth senior private client adviser Marcus Droga.
U.S. stock futures were down 0.8%-0.9% in screen trade, with front-month Nymex crude oil futures down $2.02 at $64.71 a barrel on Globex after Friday's holiday.
