Asia ekes out slight early gains....
In Monday’s NYC action, stocks had started the day lower as a trade dispute between the US and China rattled the market. The rift started on Friday, when President Obama announced tariffs against tires from China, which followed up Monday by asking the World Trade Organization to intervene. The tariffs came on the heels of a union complaint that a surge of imports of the Chinese tires were taking away American jobs.
"You don't want to be messing with your biggest trading partner who holds most of your debt, as the economy is still teetering on all sorts of edges here. Something like this could be the spark that sends us lower." Stocks advanced later on Monday as news that China's sovereign wealth fund is considering a stake in U.S. power company AES helped cool talk about the potential trade rift.
In Tuesday morning Asian action, Japan's Nikkei225 eked out gains of 0.1 percent buoyed by Toyota and other exporters as the yen fell against the dollar, but worries that it may only be a brief respite limited gains. Japan Airlines failed to add to its gains made the previous day despite news that Air France-KLM was joining a list of suitors seeking a minority stake in the loss-making Japanese carrier. China's key stock index opened up 0.08 percent on Tuesday, as China's top tourist agency prepares to launch a Shanghai IPO while most tire makers were mixed after saying the impact of the U.S. decision to impose special duties on Chinese tire exports would be limited.
Hong Kong shares opened 0.56 percent higher on Tuesday afternoon after a severe tropical storm forestalled a morning session, and investor sentiment was lifted by stronger China stocks and overseas markets. But Alibaba.com fell 9.2 percent as Yahoo! sold its 1 percent direct holding. Markets were closed on Tuesday morning as typhoon Koppu swept through Hong Kong shutting down most business and injuring at least 28 people as it headed on towards China...
After-hours US screen trade was slightly lower with about a 22 point Dow loss as of just before 22:00 CDT, while later on (about 02:15 CDT) acade traders had brought the averages back to just about flatline.
