Japan's Nikkei average rises 1.2 percent on Wednesday
UPDATE!! a/o 03:30 CDT, Euro trade rising by nearly one percent on boosted banks and commodities based on comments by U.S. Federal Reserve chief Ben Bernanke that the recession was probably over. US Screen trade showing a plus 40 point Dow.
Japan's Nikkei average rose 1.2 percent on Wednesday, buoyed by exporters such as Canon Inc after retail sales data helped boost investor confidence and lifted U.S. stocks to highs for the year, analysts said gains were likely to be limited as investors carefully monitor policies of Japan's brand-new government. Hatoyama will take office as prime minister and is expected to announce his cabinet line-up on Wednesday after a landslide win on Aug. 30.
Hong Kong shares expected to start about 1% higher on Wednesday with stronger economic data in the U.S. reinforcing hopes of a turnaround in the global economy. Banks are expected to lead the way upward. Brokers said investors were more willing to bet on further upside on hopes of improved corporate earnings.
China's key stock index opened down 0.2 percent on Wednesday, with China Vanke firmer after shareholders approved its $1.6 billion share offer. Vanke is evidently the country's second-biggest property developer, rising roughly 0.5% to 12 yuan after the shares were suspended on Tuesday, before saying its shareholders approved a new public share offer to raise up to 11.2 billion yuan. Investors often worry that such fund raising plans drain money from other issues (overall market dilution, one presumes - whereas here, any dilution concerns would typically be limited to previously-issued shares in the subject company). Analysts opined the situation with Vanke was different this time around.
Overnite US screen trade higher by roughly 20 Dow points a/o midnite CDT.
