Nikkei slides to 2-mth closing low on yen surge
UPDATE!! Prior to NYSE open, FTSE picked up on increased M&A activity to the degree US screen trade now indicates 40 point higher opening....
"Lull before the Storm".... A day relatively bereft of eco-data releases will take direction from the treasury auction results later on but not nuch more (barring unforseen political developments in a world simply RIFE with opportunities for macro-economic/geo-political tremors). As if to underscore Wall Street's apparent disconnect with Main Street here at home, overnite US screen trade seems to be blithely ignoring weak overseas markets (save Xetra DAX, which seems to be enjoying a refief rally as Merkel's previously left-leaning government coalition shifts to the right after election results) by pointing for the moment to a higher opening (a/o 05:30 CDT) - DOW printing electrons at +20 or so.
TOKYO - Japan's Nikkei average slid 2.5 percent to its lowest close in two months on Monday, as a surge in the yen hit shares of exporters such as Tokyo Electron and after disappointing housing data fuelled worries about the strength of a U.S. recovery. The yen jumped to an 8-month high against the dollar of 88.23 yen on Monday, putting heavy pressure on the exporter-heavy Nikkei .N225, as a rise in the yen eats into exporters' overseas profits when they are repatriated
HONG KONG/SHANGHAI - Hong Kong stocks fell to a three-week closing low on Monday, dragged down by telecoms after a late tumble by Chinese shares prompted skittish investors to lock in profit, and as weak U.S. housing data raised doubts about the strength of the global recovery. Optimism about an easing global recession had helped the Hong Kong stock market skim one-year highs in the past two weeks, but some investors questioned the strength of the rally, saying the market had run ahead of itself
LONDON - European shares hit their lowest level in nearly three weeks on Monday, as weaker miners on the back of falling metals prices outpaced positive multi-utility stocks that gained ground after German election results. The FTSEurofirst 300 index of top European shares fell for a third straight session and was down 0.4 percent at 980.01 points after falling to a low of 974.85 -- the lowest since Sept. 9. It is up 18 percent this year and has surged 52 percent since hitting a record low in early March. One can sense an air of edginess across the markets, as the bullish run appears to have run out of steam," said John Murphy, analyst at ODL Securities.
