Weekly Market & Eco-Data Preview
The rally will be tested next week by crucial jobs & growth data as investors are set to pore over September non-farm payrolls and the final 2Q GDP reading…. The data comes amid signs the rally could be fizzling out after three straight days of losses as the S&P put in its biggest weekly drop since early July, with Friday’s durables falling by their biggest margin in seven months.
Next week, the focus likely will be on Friday's monthly govvy-tabulated jobs data. The 9.7 percent unemployment rate is a major concern for investors because of the impact on the economy and, in particular, consumer spending. "It's a big deal every time, because it's really one of the most sensitive indicators," said Cummins Catherwood, managing director at Boenning and Scattergood in Pennsylvania. "This is right where the rubber meets the road: Do I have a job or don't I?" he said.
End-of-quarter positioning also could be provide some lift to stocks next week IF fund managers elect to move money out of bonds and into equities rather than chance being caught flat-footed in any surprise sharp rate moves by our beloved FED. Failing that, they’ll be dumping poor performers in favor of recent hot media darlings in order to print better-looking 10Qs for distribution with their quarterly statements. Either way, the early-week jockeying should be fun to watch while generating some opportunities for fleet-footed futures index players!
