Nikkei higher, steelmakers jump, earnings eyed
UPDATE!! European shares were steady in early trade on Tuesday, with banks lower, as investors awaited more third-quarter results, due later in the week. FTSEurofirst was flat at 1,005.18 points. On Monday, it rose 0.7 percent to its highest close since Sept. 23, boosted by results at Philips. The European benchmark index is up more than 55 percent from its lifetime low of March 9, as investors have become more confident on the prospects of economic recovery. "There may be some corrections in this market, but you're better off being in the market, for further gains," said Bernard McAlinden, investment strategist at NCB Stockbrokers. "Economic data is still OK, and valuations are still OK."

After being closed on Holiday Monday, Japan's Nikkei average rose 0.4 percent on Tuesday, helped higher by exporters such as Advantest Corp after the S&P 500 managed a sixth consecutive day of gains, while steelmakers climbed on a brokerage ratings hike. But gains were limited in the overall market as investors waited to see corporate earnings reports in United States and Japan, market players said. Major companies including Intel are due to report earnings later in the day. he Nikkei225 added 38.76 points by midsession to 10,055.15, after climbing 1.9 percent on Friday to its highest finish in a week. The broader Topix gained 0.4 percent to 901.10.
Hong Kong stocks are set to open up 0.34 percent on Tuesday on some previously unfilled buy orders, but with momentum and volumes low after Wall Street's weak performance overnight. Concerns over new share supply weighed on sentiment, while new worries over possible regulatory limits on Macau casinos drove related stocks lower. The benchmark Hang Seng was set to open up 72.47 points higher at 21,371.82. The China Enterprises Index of top locally listed mainland Chinese stocks was set to rise 0.49 percent to 12,436.72. China's benchmark index opened 0.35 percent firmer….
