Fitch downgrades $8.5 billion in Chicago bonds
Please be aware, my inclusion of this article is NOT motivated by some desire to take pot-shots at a major city or warn of a "second Detroit" in the making.
Chicago is my home - I was born and raised there before bring dragged out kicking and screaming halfway through my Junior year in H.S. to (of all places) Los Angeles.
It took me 50 years to get back in 2003 - with multiple stops along the roundabout circuit all over the world (missed Australia and Japan and former USSR however) as economic opportunities arose along the timeline of my two careers (Hotel/Resort Management and Finance).
The fact I'm now back in California is primarily health and family-related.
But Chicago is my first, last and permanent love.
So it PAINS me to see items like this one.
...it PAINS me to read every Monday about gang-related deaths in suburban areas.
and it PAINs me to see the line of endeavor that first attracted me to finance and the one to which I ultimately returned after touching all other bases save VC - under attack from both without (NYC-based largely) and within (we can't seem to keep from shooting ourselves in the foot with MFG - PFG and now AlphaMetrix)...
But that's another issue worthy of discussion, debate and possibly even a fisticuff or two - (at my size, by the third, a winner would've probably already been decided - its a matter of "reach" not "strength" or "determination" or "training" or even "heart" I keep telling myself)...
Chicago is not Detroit
We never became so singularly beholden to a sole industry as did Detroit.
Even meat-packing never rose to the level of automotive in Chicago and when the Stockyards were finally disbanded and shut down (yes - I remember them in the last few years - I remember the "aroma" as I remember the $1,19 Steakhouses on So Wabash where my love for blood-rare red MEAT was born).. Chicago suffered a bit and jobs were lost to hard-working butchers who had finally begun earning a living wage... but Chicago survived and even prospered.
Any of you in Chicago (heart and/or mind) stand up and be counted - don't passively allow this to continue unopposed. I'll commit to doing all I can from here.
Dan Collins is standing up and being counted there.
Join him - please.

Emerging 'New Path to Prosperity?'
Ending on a high note and early for tonight (1AM PDT), I have long had great respect for Meredith despite the unfullfillment (sp?) of her bold call on Municipalities with few exceptions, (Stockton, CA, Detroit, MI amongst them)...
I should note a very similar respect for Ed Yardeni who still contends with the cloud created when concerns over "Y2K" failed to be realized.
For anyone in the "Market Research" biz, this is one of the worst possible scenarios from which the "Chicken Little" title lingers like a huge tattoo of a past love interest on an exposed body part.
Cynically speaking, much better the fears you express are realized that entirely thwarted and even WORSE if they're thwarted due to YOUR brave efforts.
This video covers a rare (lately) positive outlook by Whitney.

.. about four minutes left in the trading session. DOW is headed down 3% in the last six sessions and it looks like another down day today. The longest bear streak since last August. when we had all of that turmoil going on in Washington.. Now - as long as Europe remains center-stage, it would appear that the FX market is calling the shots. This is the market to keep an eye on right now and it could well retrace a year as it's now just feeling for support around its 200-day moving average. So long as Greenback ascendant, Euro aswoon in risk-offerage... Impressive Word-Smithing if I DO say so myself - Halleluiah, Brothers and Sisters!

Rebound to begin in Shanghai?
The Shanghai Composite, often a leading indicator in global markets' direction, is due for a consolidation, followed by a rebound, Daryl Guppy, CEO of Guppytraders.com, told CNBC on Thursday.
"The key fact for the Shanghai Composite is that we're developing a rebound," Guppy said. "This is important not just for regional markets, but for global markets as well."

Risk on... Risk off...
Risk Off Back On
Feb. 5, 2010 For much of the past year, investors have been chasing risk in every corner of the globe and every asset class. Now they're being reminded there's potential downside to all that risk. So far the move is barely a correction relative to the size of the rally. But fundamentals dictate it could go much further yet.

Double-Dipper on R/E Horizon??
CNBC's Diana Olick reports on a rise in mortgage applications, buyers paying below asking price and borrowers paying credit card bills ahead of their mortgage. If the latter is right, could this herald another downwave in the recovery as ever more credit-worthy homeowners either buy a new home just before walking out on their upside-down obligation or opt out to rentals altogether?

New Home Sales - dissected...
Sales of new homes rose last month to the highest level in more than a year as strong activity in the South made up for weakness in the rest of the country.
The Commerce Department said Wednesday that sales rose 6.2 percent to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 430,000 from an upwardly revised 405,000 in September.
